The Department of Defense has ‘pre-released’ the fall 2023 round of SBIR and STTR Broad Area Announcements (BAA’s).
There are 89 SBIR topics (2023.3) and nine STTR topics (2023.C). This round has seven DoD departments participating in SBIR and five in STTR.
SBIR
- Department of the Navy
- Department of the Air Force
- Chemical and Biological Defense
- Defense Health Agency
- Defense Logistics Agency
- Office of Secretary of Defense – Defense Human Resource Activity
- Office of Secretary of Defense – National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency
STTR
- Department of Air Force
- Defense Health Agency
- Defense Microelectronics Activity
- Missile Defense Agency
- Office of the Secretary of Defense – National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency
The DoD will begin accepting proposals for topics on September 20, 2023, and the deadline for receipt of proposals is October 18, 2023 no later than 12:00 p.m. ET.
The pre-release period is a time when interested applicants can look through the announcements for potential topics that might fit their capabilities and guidelines. However, guidelines and topics might change before the due date, so be sure to monitor and check in with topics of interest. Read the current guidelines in the official SBIR document here and official STTR document here.
Prerelease is and important part of the DoD process because it is the only time that applicants are allowed to contact the Technical Person of Contact (TPOC) and discuss details of the topics. Once the ‘official’ release occurs, applicants will not be able to talk with the TPOC directly.
The CTC looks forward to helping applicants prepare for submission. The DoD SBIR website for more details is found here.
